Living in Rouen France as a digital nomad
Discover what Rouen has to offer if you’re a digital nomad in France
Rouen, the City of a Hundred Spires, is the capital of the region of Normandy, in the North-West of France.
History buffs may know it as the site where Joan of Arc was burnt at the stake in 1431 as part of the Hundred Years’ War. You can learn more about this in the immersive Jeanne d’Arc museum (at a very reasonable €11 a ticket for adults).

It’s known for its gothic cathedrals, arts museums and laid-back lifestyle, all within an hour’s drive of Paris, but with much lower rent!
You can enjoy many day trips from Rouen, exploring all of what Normandy has to offer such as Deauville, a pretty, upmarket seaside spot and Bayeux, a classic French town with some lovely canals to admire.
So overall, what is life like living in Rouen as a digital nomad?

Atmosphere
Rouen is very easy to walk around due to its small size which makes living there easy. There is a good level of English but of course, French is preferred, so picking up some basic phrases will help.

There is a large student population which means there are plenty of lively bars and quirky hang out spots, contrasting with its ancient ruins and relics. It’s a perfect mix of the old and the new and the residents are friendly and open.
Due to its location, the weather is temperamental but tends to be fairly cool and wet year-round. So it’s definitely not one for sun-seekers! But it can be a rereshing change if you’ve recently been in more tropical climates.
Rouen has some of the most interesting architecture we’ve ever seen. And so, just wandering around the streets, admiring the unique buildings and alleyways, is a pastime in itself.

Food
You won’t be disappointed with the gastronomy in Rouen, with seemingly every street packed with enticing bars, restaurants and boulangeries.
Try Creperie Rouennaise for delicious crepes and galettes.

Or Atelier 17 for wine and cheese after work, that’s served generously and at exceptional value.

Other highlights include Delerium Cafe for a great beer selection, Zhoushi for value sushi to-go; and Emma boulangerie for your morning baguette.
