You may have never heard of it, but a visit to Reims might surprise you. It’s a city at the heart of the French Champagne region and boasting a rich cultural heritage, with over 20 French kings crowned within its walls from the 11th century.

Moving into the present, digital nomads and remote workers can benefit from all of the amenities the city offers such as the finest food and wine, vibrant coworking spaces and friendly locals – all within an hour or two from Paris. With all of its charms, living in Reims is a choice you are unlikely to regret.

Taking a stroll in Reims

Reims is a small, walkable city that can be easily explored on foot or via local buses and trams. There’s a good shopping, eating and nightlife district, and a local food market, the Halles Boulingrin which is open Wednesday to Saturday providing all of the fresh local produce you could want. Or stop off in Biocoop, a great supermarket outlet with a fantastic food and snacks range.

The old streets and architecture are beautiful and it’s a peaceful and charming city to amble about at leisure.

Of course, you cannot and should not miss the majestic centrepiece of the city, the Catholic Cathedral Notre-Dame, which is situated in the city centre. Huge in size and stature, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site with a thousand years of history and where French Kings would historically be crowned.

Needless to say, the interiors are magnifique and includes some astonishing custom-made stained glass from celebrated artist Marc Chagall. Whether you’re religious or not, it’s an awe-inspiring place to visit, sit, reflect, be.

Explore

From Reims, you can get direct trains into Paris and Brussels in just a couple of hours.

Nearer to home, you can visit Epernay and Ay via rental car or the train in just 30 minutes. If you do, you’ll be rewarded with the opportunity to visit some of the finest international and boutique wine and champagne houses such as Bollinger, Moet & Chandon and Charles Mignon

Eat

Of course, Reims has great food to accompany the fine wine – what else would you expect! Some of our favourites include A’Lere du Temps for delectable sweet and savoury galettes and crepes.

Fresh seafood at Le Bocal or steak frites at Bistro des Anges and Italian fare and a great atmosphere at Alba.

For something sweet or your morning baguette, head to one of the best boulangeries in town, Boulangerie Les Halles and thank us later.

Drink

In the home of Champagne, you can expect to find great Champagne bars, of course! Popular with locals, Le Coq Rouge, Le Wine Bar by Le Vintage and Le Clos will do the trick.

Pub L’Escale has a more relaxed interior and is perfect for a beer with friends.

Our favourite place was Le General, a small and unassuming venue and the perfect place for a coffee or glass of wine. You can also play a local version of online bingo, (please do so responsibly!) which is televised at the front of the bar, which is a fun and unique concept we enjoyed as a novelty after a busy day.

Work

Of course, there are numerous cafes with WiFi you can work remotely from and also specialist co-working spaces such as COKO Working and La Capsule.

We also made the most of the public libraries in town which are a great free alternative to the more expensive hotdesking option. The largest is the Mediatheque Jean Falala opposite the Cathedral. Our favourite, with its beautiful art-deco interiors, is the Carnegie Library, donated to the locals by philanthropist Andrew Carnegie himself.

Sleep

There are numerous hotel options of course and we highly recommend Airbnb, as ever. We had a long-term stay in this sumptuous apartment at a very reasonable rate by travelling outside of peak season and the Summer months.
